From Edge Shaping to Final Stropping — One Complete Sharpening Progression
The 19 × 305 mm (3/4" × 12") 7-Step Knife Sharpening Belt Kit is designed for users who want more control over each stage of powered knife sharpening — not simply a selection of coarse and fine sanding belts.
Instead of making large jumps between abrasive grades, this kit follows a carefully selected 7-stage sharpening progression, moving from initial edge shaping through sharpening, refinement, honing and final cloth stropping.
Different abrasive technologies are used at different stages because each stage of sharpening has a different job.
| Step | Stage | Abrasive | Grit | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SHAPE | Ceramic | 120# | Edge shaping and repair |
| 2 | SHARPEN | Zirconia | 240# | Establish and sharpen the cutting edge |
| 3 | REFINE | PYTAMID Structured Abrasive | 400# | Reduce coarse sharpening marks |
| 4 | FINE SHARPEN | PYTAMID Structured Abrasive | 1200# | Progressive fine sharpening |
| 5 | HONE | PYTAMID Structured Abrasive | 3000# | Refine and smooth the edge |
| 6 | FINE HONE | PYTAMID Structured Abrasive | 6000# | Ultra-fine edge finishing |
| 7 | STROP | Cloth Belt | Final Finish | Final stropping and polishing |
Why 7 Steps?
A good edge is not created by simply moving from a coarse belt directly to an ultra-fine belt.
Large jumps in abrasive grade can leave deeper scratches from the previous stage and require the finer abrasive to work longer than necessary.
Our 7-step system introduces additional intermediate refinement stages — particularly 400# and 1200# — to create a more progressive transition from initial sharpening to fine honing.
The result is a sharpening process that gives the user greater control over how far the edge is refined.
You also don't need to use all seven belts every time.
A damaged or heavily dulled edge may require the earlier stages, while routine maintenance can begin at one of the finer PYTAMID stages.
Different Abrasives for Different Jobs
Ceramic 120# — Shape
A high-performance ceramic abrasive is used for the first stage where controlled material removal is required.
Ideal for reshaping an edge, correcting moderate damage or establishing a new bevel before sharpening.
Zirconia 240# — Sharpen
The second stage establishes the working cutting edge while beginning to remove the deeper scratch pattern left by the shaping stage.
PYTAMID 400# — Refine
This intermediate stage is an important part of the progression.
It bridges the gap between coarse sharpening and fine finishing, helping remove the 240# scratch pattern before moving into the finer structured abrasives.
PYTAMID 1200# — Fine Sharpen
Begins the fine sharpening process and further refines the cutting edge with a more controlled surface finish.
PYTAMID 3000# — Hone
Designed for fine edge refinement after sharpening has already been established.
At this stage the objective is no longer aggressive material removal, but progressively improving the edge and surface finish.
PYTAMID 6000# — Fine Hone
The final abrasive stage for very fine edge refinement before stropping.
Cloth Belt — Strop
The seventh stage changes from abrasive sharpening to final stropping.
The cloth belt can be used for final edge finishing and polishing and may also be used with a suitable polishing compound where required.
More Than a Mixed Belt Pack
This kit combines Ceramic, Zirconia, PYTAMID structured abrasives and cloth finishing technology in one sharpening sequence.
Each belt has a specific position and purpose.
SHAPE → SHARPEN → REFINE → FINE SHARPEN → HONE → FINE HONE → STROP
The objective is simple: give the user a logical abrasive progression from a working edge through to a highly refined final finish.

Individual Replacement Belts Available
Every abrasive stage is also available separately.
Once a particular belt wears out, you can replace only the grit you need rather than purchasing another complete kit.
Additional coarse, ultra-fine and stropping options are also available separately for specialised sharpening requirements.
