1 x 30 Knife Making Belts: A Practical Grit Guide

Good finishing starts before the polishing stage. On a 1 x 30 inch belt sander, each belt should have a clear job: remove material, refine the previous scratches, or prepare the surface for the finish you want. A planned sequence makes it easier to see which belt to use next and which one needs replacing.

1. Decide what you want to achieve

Blade profiling, bevel grinding, cosmetic finishing and edge sharpening are different operations. Inspect the workpiece and decide what needs to change. Avoid starting with aggressive stock removal when the surface only needs light refinement. Conversely, a fine polishing belt is not a practical substitute for removing deep grinding marks.

2. Shape with the appropriate grinding stage

The Abrasivestocks Starter kit includes ceramic belts in 36#, 60#, 80# and 120#. These provide a selection of grinding stages rather than a requirement to use every belt on every job. Choose according to your starting surface, steel and machine. Use controlled passes and check progress regularly.

Machine power and technique matter. Follow the machine and belt operating limits rather than forcing the belt to compensate for an unsuitable setup.

3. Remove the previous scratch pattern

Before changing to a finer stage, inspect the surface under consistent lighting. If deeper scratches remain, return to a stage capable of removing them. Moving finer too early can add work without improving the result.

The Starter selection continues with 180# and 240# zirconia and PYTAMID A65, A30 and A6 options. These are the supplied product labels, not a universal grit conversion chart. Structured abrasive grades and conventional grit numbers describe different systems; use the actual surface finish to judge your next step.

4. Separate finishing from polishing

The kit also includes fine silicon carbide belts, felt and wool belts, and polishing wax. Fine abrasive preparation reduces the remaining scratch pattern before polishing. The final appearance depends on the workpiece, preparation and process; no belt number alone promises a mirror finish.

Keep stages and consumables organised to limit carry-over of coarse abrasive into the finishing work. Stop and check the cause if the surface develops new scratches rather than becoming more uniform.

5. Make the next purchase easier

After a project, note the material and grit used at each stage. Record which belts wore first and which stages you rarely needed. Your next order can then replace the working part of your setup instead of repeating the whole initial purchase.

Choose individual 1 x 30 inch replacement belts, or compare the full Starter and Premium contents if you want a wider selection.

Check the setup before use

Confirm 25.4 x 762 mm fit, belt clearance and permitted speed. Disconnect power for belt changes, inspect the belt and check tracking before use. Follow your machine's instructions, including guarding and suitable protection. For leather stropping, read our blade-direction guide before starting.
